Oriflamme Canyon, Chariot Canyon, and Rodriguez Canyon Trails

There are two approaches to these canyon trails, one from the north, off of highway 78 and one from the south (N33 04.061 W116 32.838), off of county road S2  (N33 00.447 W116 27.386). The canyons can be used as a loop trail by driving up one and them down the other.  The land adjacent to much of this area is private property.  The area includes many mining properties who's owners are not friendly to strangers.  Take care to avoid confrontations with property owners.

From Hwy S2

Turn off of S2 to the west at the Box Canyon sign (N33 00.447 W116 27.386). You will come to a fork in the road. You want to stay to the right (north). About two miles from S2 you should come to the next fork.  Take the left fork for Oriflamme Canyon and the right fork for Rodriguez Canyon.

From Hwy 78

East of Julian, turn off of highway 78 to the south just before the Banner Store (N33 04.061 W116 32.838). You will be immediately be confronted by a No Trespassing Sign. The sign is miss-leading, the land on both sides of the road are private property for the first few miles. You will come to a gate; leave the gate as you find it (open/closed). The first time we drove this trail the gate was closed. My son got out of the Jeep walked up to the gate and came back. The gate looked like it was locked, it was simply chained closed in a way that looked locked. There is another miss-leading sign on the gate; Locked Gate Ahead. The only locked gates are at the entrance to an active mining claim.
