Anza Borrego Mud Caves  (difficulty rating 1)


(Passenger cars can easily reach the Mud Caves but need to stay on the hard packed road to avoid getting stuck in sand.)

The mud caves are in Arroyo Tapiado and are located approximately 1/2 way between Interstate 8 and Hwy 78 on Hwy S2.  The trailhead is to the east of the desert community of Canebrake. 

From the intersection of Hwy 78 and Hwy S2 (Scissors Crossing) go south east on S2 approximately 25 miles to Canebrake.  At Canebrake turn east into Canebrake Wash and continue to the intersection with Arroyo Tapiado Wash.  From there turn north approximately 2-3 miles into a narrow canyon with sides 20 to 30 ft high.  There are numerous caves in the area. 

From Interstate 8 turn north on Hwy S2 at the desert community of Ocotillo (Not Ocotillo Wells) then continue approximately 28 miles to the community of Canbrake.  At Canebrake turn east into Canebrake Wash and continue to the intersection with Arroyo Tapiado Wash.  From there turn north approximately 2-3 miles into a narrow canyon with sides 20 to 30 ft high.  There are numerous caves in the area.
