Jacumba - Border Trails
From San Diego take
Interstate 8 East to the Jacumba exit (Exit
73). Proceed south on
Carrizo Gorge Rd. to Old Hwy 80. Then turn east to the trail head
at approx. GPS N32 38.191 W116 06.787. There are signs at the
trailhead. The trail passes by some private property (stay on the
trail). The trail will quickly climb the mountain then branch near
the top. Take the trail to the left to Valley of the Moon. (The area to
the east is designated Wilderness.) Continue across the valley and
visit the Elliot Mine. After the mine return to the north by the
same route you entered the valley and take a left as you pass out of the
valley. There are a number of trails that branch. The trail
toward the south will take you to the Mexican border fence (just barbed
wire in this area.) Follow the fence toward the west then back to
the north before returning to Old Hwy 80. There are a number of
other trails in the general area.
